Almost a year this website exists!

How come is there not that many votes per company? asked a friend of me and a post on the IGDA

I think it boils down to 2 main reasons:

1. People don’t get the invites
2. People are afraid of voting

I plan on tackling both issues this year actually.

For the first one, I may be onto something. I’m trying to manage sending of invite through another hosting provider: namely google mail. The idea here is that spam filters and company filters won’t be filtering on gmail.com domain and the goal is that the invite do reach the user.

For the second one, I need to build trust and find alternate possibilities for people to vote without getting rid of high credibility that email allow. Any other ideas?

So what else is happening in 2009?

A new homepage as I’m sure most people realised and some other reformatted pages. I hope you do like it.

Also, one good friend of mine suggested this week-end that we should be able to amend each answer with a quick remark.
The idea is that is you may want to mention in relation to the “Your company offers you ample training” that your company sent everyone to GDC america this year, or that in relation to “You are paid fairly” that extra hours are paid…
Sure people can put that in review but this allow more targeted feedback (and is more relevant in comparing companies).

It’s now in place, but display will only be effective when the next item on my list is done, that is:

Introduce a graph instead of multiple bars to see evolution through time. I will also provide detailed page for each criteria not to loose the detailed information, but the best is to wait and see how it will be looking like. I want to do that this semester already.

All in all, happy new year and happy rating!

It’s obviously a tricky system to put in place as you need some kind of moderation to avoid counter-productive slippages.

I yet need to put a good conduct chart in place, but so far the reviews have been okay. I’ll be reading them all before approval to verify they don’t disclose anonymity or target some recognised persons and will be adding a link to report unappropriate comments in case it slips through my filter.

Companies do evolve with time. That’s a fact. Change of management, new employees, new projects… all contribute to cultural changes that affects the rating of a company.

The problem to face then for a rating website like YourWorkplace is to reflect properly these changes instead of aggregating all the results regardless of time.

The second semester 2008 (marked by the 1st of July) is then an important milestone for this website as all new votes will be counted toward the second half of 2008. The first half will be frozen forever and previous voters will be invited to vote once again for the second half of the year in a few months.

With time, I have good hope that this website will be able to show trends for most companies to give you a more accurate information, which is the primarily goal of this website.
